unusual engine paint wear? (pics inside)
« on: June 29, 2021, 05:48:49 am »
I was looking at a 2013 bolt for sale (semi) locally and when I asked for additional pictures this really stood out to me - is this something caused by running excessively hot? found the forum and figured you all would be the ones to ask, the bikes listed as having 15,000km

rest of bike isn't pristine but pretty good for being an early model and the price is attractive

cheers for any advice y'al

[edit]: I saw someone with a similar problem and it could just be a keychain rubbing lmao? what a pain in the ass

Looks like someone dribbled some brake fluid on it then didn't wipe it off well.  Nothing I would worry about.  I'd be more concerned about non-metallic aging parts and engine condition.  If you are not a mechanic yourself, and the asking price is a few thousand euros, then it might pay you in the long run to have a mechanic look at it and give you an estimate for what it would cost to repair.  Motorcycles are notoriously abused, but once in awhile you can find a used one in fair shape.

#1.... there ARE no 2013 Bolts - Production started in '13, but they are a '14 model.  OK  - rant over! ;D

The engine top cover is only plastic, so it's easy to repaint. You'll have to take them off to change plugs or check the valves, anyway, so it's not really a big panic. To me, it just looks like abrasion - like something has been rubbing against it. It might be a "flag" or keytag since it's in the right place (Front right cylinder, it looks like). It's only a couple of screws to take it off if you want to paint it.

I have a "Remove before Flight" tag on my keys and I KNOW it flaps against my tank, but I hadn't thought of checking the engine top cover. I'm guessing mine probably looks like that too!

Where you from?
