How do you remove the bar end weights on a 2017 C-spec?
« on: October 09, 2021, 07:03:14 pm »
Hi!

I searched the forum for answers but could only seem to find answers relating to older models and/or the R-spec, which seems to have installed a different kind of weights.

I have bought a pair of Kellermann BL2000 bar end indicators for my 2017 C-spec with clip-on handlebars that Iím trying to install. The problem is Iím having a hard time removing the bar end weights. Thereís no weld spot underneath the grips, so no point in drilling into the handle. It seems to be a mixture of rubber and glue around the the bar end weight which keeps it from moving. Tried looking it up on YouTube and found som solutions where some argued you could yank it out. Does anyone have any experience in this? Please share :)

Hehe well then your one of the lucky ones ;)
I first tried to just screw the indicator into the screwhole inside the bar end weight, but I think that caused a short circuit and blew a fuse. The indicator is supposed to be isolated with a rubber ring that holds it in place, but as it stands now itís wired directly to metal which obviously is not a good idea  ;D
So unless I find a way to remove the bar end weight, Iím not gonna be able to use the indicators.

OMG - You're trying bar end Turn signals.
I just put the SCR grips - I think C spec bars are solid. Your end weight is just bonus over the top of the thing, just for extra weight, as though the bike wasn't heavy enough.
Cool.

Yes, turn signals :D

Theres about 8-10 cm of bar end weight that goes inside the bar. I have already put a cable through the thread inside the weight and out of a drilled hole just past the throttle wire-case, so I am sure that the end bars are hollow, at least 10-15cm in from the bar end.

Use a magnet to check if the theaded section and tube are aluminum or steel. If aluminum, just drill it. If the tube is aluminium and the insert is steel, it's probably glued in and you should be able to pull it out with a little heat.

I went and checked on mine. The insert is steel. The tube is aluminum. I thought the "tube" was solid aluminum. LOL.
I also believe mine just unbolted now that I'm trying to remember.
Now I want to install bar end turnsignals - so please show me how your install looks ?
You had to drill the cast end for routing the wires ?
Cool.
Srinath.

Okey, thanks. The magnet check was a good tip. Iíll have to look into that, and if it checks out Iíll try to use my wifeís hair dryer and pull it out. I can use the screw from the bar end and thread it in around half ways and then use a pincer to pull. Kinda like this: https://youtu.be/ecXDwtcfbkg

If you've drilled a hole for the wires in the other end, and its basically glue holding steel insert in a aluminum tube, put a rod through that hole for the wire and knock it out.
Cool.

So I poked around on my bike - only trying to see what its made of rather than true take it out.
OK Its a steel outer sleeve that has expanded and bit into the aluminum, and a rubber donut around it and a steel nut in the middle. I saw the sliding hammer video, but I believe there's a better and cheaper solution.
Take a small drill and drill say 6-8 holes in the rubber.
Then tighten a bolt into the center and tighten it till you break it free of all the rubber.
Now run the wires through that rubber encased hole. Its a good insulator.
Cool.

Or try this -

I dont know how deep that rubber and threads run. But that rubber is what keeps the tabs from folding and letting it out.
Cool.

The hole is in a 90í angle into the bar direction, so i think itíll be difficult to knock the weight out from the inside just because I wonít get enough force. Whatever I knock on will have to be bend 90í first and then straightened(?).

But maybe a combination of both drilling into the rubber, twisting the weight and then pull it would work.

I looked at the video Srinath, and have thought of that as well, might try everything  :P it seems like either way I have to destroy the weight and mechanism in order to get it out.

LOL. Thought bar was solid.
Cool.

Hehe, well i think i t serves a purpose - The weight is in there I believe to reduce vibrations in the handlebar while riding. However, a lot of people customize their bikes with new mirrors or turn signals so I donít think itís that important and that it can be taken off. Some experts here on the forum might argue otherwise though as Iím still a newbie in this 8)

The one in the video is different. It's has one-way grabbing teeth that allow it to go in easy but hard to remove. The C-Spec is a solid piece that is a press fit. You'll need a slide hammer. A threaded rod or long bolt, vice grips and a hammer will get it done.
