2020 Bolt fuel injection controller or ECU flash?

Hi there,

I'm a fairly new rider and I'm loving life on two wheels. I ride a 2020 Bolt, however I'm having some trouble finding some answers to a question I have regarding fuel injection with a new exhaust system and air filter.
I'm looking to change both sooner rather than later but any fuel injection controllers/power commanders I find don't seem to fit the 2020 bolt. Does anyone have any solutions to this and whether or not I should go down this road or instead reflash the ECU? I've seen some good things said about Ivan's flash and there's a set up for the twin slash/Vo2 system I'm interested in.
Apologies in advance but it seems like the 2020 differs in some way where most controllers I see don't fit.
Can anyone help me out with better info? I figured this is the place.

Just my opinion, and there will be others on this forum that might disagree, but I don't see any reason for a fuel controller or an ECU flash -- the ECU will eventually compensate for any changes in exhaust and/or air intake.  For example when I first switched to a Cobra exhaust and air intake, my mileage went from 53 mpg to around 60 mpg.  But now it is back to around 53 mpg. I have never used either the aftermarket fuel controller nor the flash.

As far as fit goes, the Bolt hasn't changed that much over the years it has been in production, just that some vendors wont guarantee that their product works for newer models they haven't tested or examined.

DrM, if you're suggesting the ECU will eventually learn as you ride like some do for other vehicles, it doesn't. Any compensation in fueling would be immediate after a change. Your Bolt probably got better fuel mileage initially from the fresh K&N because it was running leaner and as it collected dust, it got less lean. The filtering ability of a freshly oiled gauze type filter is not good so more air and dirt are allowed thru than with a slightly dirty one.

I don't disagree with your logic, and even assuming that is all that takes place, the fact that the mileage is now the same as when I bought the Bolt new indicates the air fuel ratio is also about the same -- so the end result (for me) is that no fuel controller or flashing is really necessary.  Of course, I have a bell over the air intake so I am sucking air in from the hot side, so that may also factor in.  So I suppose riders with aftermarket "naked" air intakes and no bell so they are sucking air in from the cold side perhaps might need something to compensate.

The Bolt is known to run lean at full throttle without the airbox and adding about 5% more fuel up top is what riders found to work best with an open filter. You won't see a change in the fuel mileage unless you spend a whole lot more time at full throttle where you wouldn't be getting 53 mpg. At some angle less than full throttle, the partially closed throttle plates (not the airbox or filter) determine airflow. Do a proper high speed, full throttle plug check and you'll see that it runs on the lean side with a K&N and is quite rich with the stock box.

As for the warm air intake causing the bike to richer, I put an intake air sensor in the airbox and got >20*F higher temps. Running off of that sensor, I expected it to feel lean and/or give better fuel mileage but it didn't change significantly (72 vs 71 mpg) and it's impossible to duplicate riding conditions exactly. Warmer intake air is proven to get better mpg because the throttle plates need to be open further (for the same load) which creates less restriction but your's is still much cooler than stock since it's getting air blown back from the camchain cover instead of between the cylinders.

My experience with Vance Hines slip on and Vance Hanes Naked Air Intake and a PCV was that no matter what map I ran (I called and talked to Power Commander and got the best map from them per my setup) was that I had continually terrible deceleration popping.

Long story short, I sold the PCV, got my ECU flashed by Ivan and it runs as smooth as butter now. That is my reccomendation for you once you have the exact pipes & intake you want.

You'll get more HP but your fuel economy will decrease.
