Lost my bolt's only key
« on: November 16, 2015, 01:18:02 pm »
Hi Everyone.  Unfortunately the only key I had for my Bolt fell out of my pocket over the weekend and is now lost in the abyss.

Does anyone have any suggestions.  The dealer is no help.  I read somewhere that Yamaha no longer supports lost keys.  I also don
t have the original paperwork that has the key code as I bought the bike used.  I had a locksmith come out and he was unable to make a key.  DO I just need a better locksmith?  Are there any other options?  How can I find out my bike's keycode?  Once I have the infamous keycode then what do I do?

Delaware Pete would be the guy for this one, he manages a dealership. Try sending him a message and I'm sure he will get back to you.

I was told by the dealership when I got it that there is no look up for the key like cars you have to get a new ignition switch and tumblers if you lose the keys and code

A good locksmith can re-key the locks on your bike. If you listen to the dealer you are going to have to spend lots of money! You will not only have to buy the ignition, you will also have to replace the side cover on the left side and you will need to replace the locking gas cap! It also takes a special socket wrench to remove the old ignition switch if you don't already own one. If you have the dealer do all this you are in for a big bill! (I lost my key and at first I could not find my spare. That's how I know this because my dealer told me the same thing that yours did! Luckily I found my spare!)  Do you have the little tag that came attached to your keys when you bought the bike? On that tag is the key code. Again, a well equipped locksmith can cut you a new key if you have the code. :(

I think I read somewhere that the original dealer that sold the bike is supposed to write the key code on the sales paperwork that they are
Supposed to keep.

Also, not sure if it's an option, but if all else fails and you are looking at big bux to replace stock items,  check out the guard dog rfid systems, why replace if you can upgrade?   http://www.digitalguarddawg.com/motorcycles

I just went into some deal jackets for my Yamaha inventory, and the key code is handwritten(on all of ours anyway) on the PDI sheet, top right box on the form.

The selling dealer should absolutely have this.  If they don't, it's just pure laziness, and there is NO excuse for it.

If it was purchased used....you are shit out of luck.

It was purchased used therefore I do not have the KeyCode.
Is there a way to track down the dealer that originally sold it new from the VIN?

Some places can trace cut an existing key, and actual Locksmiths (not Pop-a-Lock) can craft a new key as long as the have access to the ignition.

That being said, as a dealer, we put the key code in every deal so we always have it in case it's needed, plus it's on the PDI and the Bill of Sale.  We are also required to put them in the dealer network for Kawasaki and Suzuki.

If it's that much easy then dealers will no longer work and everyone will visit locksmith store to get new keys.

Makes me think that I should see if I can find and record the key code for my bike, since my dealer has gone out of business.  I DO still have both of my original keys (plus one that I had cut when I thought I lost one.

Is there an easy way to figure out the key code from an original key?
