Gas cap
« on: May 17, 2020, 11:44:03 am »
Old question: I have a 2013 Bolt I bought brand new and love it after the following mods: replaced air filter and pipe, blacked out as much as I can, added Austrian Army saddle bags, Ivanís flash of ecu, new ME 888 tyres etc.

But canít find a replacement for the shitty gas cap. That thing sucks. I dread going for fuel because it takes me ~10 mins to put it on each time!  Anyone have a solution to this? Iím thinking if there are no caps (black preferable, doesnít have to lock) Iím going stuff a black rag in there instead of the useless cap.

Rant over. Rubber side down all.

The new one will come with different keys, and apparently the mechanism is different -
BUT - you should be able to strip it down and remove just the lock TUMBLER set and swap them - and keep your old (matching key) lock in the black cap.

Good luck!

Thanks Norm. Ordered a black cap  on EBay that may or may not fit.

The YouTube video linked above specifically said this is not possible.

If someone can figure it out I would definitely do it, but not worth carrying around another key.

I am the least mechanically able man on the planet, but I have zero problems with putting the fuel cap back on the bike. I just make sure that little triangular marker is pointed towards the front of the bike, and press the cap down with two thumbs (doing nothing with the key).

I'm with you, I don't understand the problem. Do you use the key when putting it back on? With the key turned it slides back in easy.

If your key fits the new cap but doesn't turn, you only have to remove the barrel, insert your key and grind off all the tumbler ends that stick out. Just don't grind off the bottom one that holds the barrel in place.

The only thing that would prevent you from using the original key is if it doesn't fit the barrel. The new lock and keys might be grooved opposite from your key so 50/50 chance it'll fit.

For me it's not the key that's the problem Ė It's the ugliness of the oem cap. Feels like a shiny bright eye staring at me every time I get on the bike. I can live with an extra key if that's what it takes. /David

Maybe a better solution is just to spray-paint the gas cap black with quality paint.  It is just so much easier and cheaper.

I've been running this one for 2 years with zero issues.  I just use the little key that cam with it (I have Digital Guard Dawg, so no keys anyway).  I'm probably gonna order one for my new (to me) Raider, I checked and it fits the Raider as well.

Pir8, will your Bolt key go in as far as the little key? If it does and the barrel can be removed, it could be made to work with it.
