Wobble wont go away
« on: June 06, 2020, 04:33:05 pm »
sup everyone. im hoping someone has found some kind of solution for the wobble from this bike. ive done basically everything people have suggested. different tires, shinko 777, all bearing steering bearings. ive now even switched out the front forks since there were questions regarding the straightness of them. Im out of ideas. I still get wobble around the 45 mph spot, both on the deceleration and if im on cruise. im really hoping someone else has found a permanent solution to this.

Sounds awful.  I haven't had any wobble on my 2014.  Stock forks, head bearings.  Went from crap Bridgstones to Michelin Commander II.  Awesome tire.  I don't know about Shinkos except the price point is attractive and I haven't heard many terrible reviews.  I considered them before I put the extra money into the commander II's and it has been very worth it from a commuting standpoint. They are not a canyon carving tire, but I would have no hesitations unless there was a bit of moisture...even then, they are a fine tire.  Anyways...Even with the stock Bridgestones, I never had wobble...lane wandering was a different story.

Not sure what else could cause wobble...Is everything aligned from front to rear? If it is a used bike, are you sure the frame is straight?  Was there an install error with the new headstock bearings and forks?

ANOTHER Forum Post addressed this WOBBLE , around 44mph for me too
One person said they switched to the following tires AND the wobble completely went away - hmmm

Hi
I am one of the unlucky few that even with the bearings swaps still have had the wobble.
Then I replaced the tires and became even worst  ( with Metzeler)...
But since I have replaced the tires with Avon Cobra the wobble is gone..
2 years later and roughly 6000 miles  my Bolt is still fine....
I am not saying swapping tires is the cure BUT it worked in my case....

Hi there, new member here looking to buy a Bolt and see these topic pop up a lot.

Does the wobble only happen when you let go of the bars or can you still feel it even when both hands are firmly gripping the handlebars?

Thanks,

Thanks,
i agree with last POST - the wobble / shake occurs at 33mph up to 45mph (i never let go over that speed)
and i would NEVER have noticed any wobble - except that i read about it and i did LET GO of steering to see the SHAKE
IF you have a habit of cruising with NO HANDS - then watch out
OTHERWISE, not an issue - after all WHEN You let off the throttle, the bike slows down quickly - so look Mom NO HANDS riding sounds very rare and short lived

Hey guys,

I just want to add a bit to this conversation. I had severe wobbles on my 14' as I switched to narrow bars and extended my forks which exacerbated the problem. When I swapped the head bearing, that helped a TON but I do still get  some wobbles in that 45mph range on decel IF I take a hand off (which I don't make a habit of.) I'm still running stock tires though. Once I switch tires, I'm really hoping it goes away completely but it seems to me that both head bearing and different tires are necessary to solve this problem. Lastly, it blows my mind that OEM sells a bike that does this - and gets away with it. Ride safe out there.

I've had this exact same wobble on the following bikes: ST1300, Honda Valkyrie, FJR1300, Honda Goldwing and Yamaha Bolt. Each time wobble was solved with new front tire. Problem started when front tire was close to 1/2-3/4 wear (approx.). On the Bolt with OEM tires it started around 6k miles and was terrible on roads with rain groves. Went with Shinko (actually from what I can remember I think I went Shinko on all the other bikes, they are my first choice) problem gone and rain groves no issue.

Rain Grooves ? Like those in CA ? those are murder on handling. Somehow on my GS500 they were more intent on catching the rear tire than the front. But I learnt never to use a tire with a central groove on those things.
Cool.

What brand steering bearing did you put in? Would you be willing to provide me with a link?

This is a somewhat difficult job.  You have to remove the bearing races and press on new ones.  If you don't know what I just said, it will be frustrating for you.  It can be done, but you may need to buy/rent some tools or perhaps take the tripple tree down to a shop to have the race put on. You'll also have to extract the races from the steering head, which is kind of delicate.

I can not remember that but I will check if I can find the original packaging of the bearings. ...

Bearing replacment might not work unless you tighten the nut enough. Less torque - wobble, too much torque - The bike wont go straight. Try to tighten it up until you find the sweet spot. Another possible factor may bad balance in front tire. I put 15 gram weights counter wise the air nipple. Good luck!
