Tutivillus:
Here's what the Service Manual has to say......
They (improperly) call it an AC magneto - (it should correctly be called an alternator or AC generator - a magneto is used to fire spark plugs).... Anyway - it's output is 14.0 volts, 460 watts at 5000 rpm. So, basically - it's a 33 amp alternator and the rectifier is rated for 50 amps. Not too shabby for a bike. Heck - not too shabby for some cars!
My old XS650 was running 15 amps on a good day..... and was running a mechanical voltage regulator and points ignition, on top of about 13 amps worth of standard lighting. Dicey at the best of times..... The lights would dim noticeably when it was at idle. Not a chance to use anything better than the stock 40 watt headlight (barely better than a candle
) - and if you had the 50 watt high beam on - you better be running at 5000 rpm or your battery life was only minutes
.
A lot of XS owners swapped over to LEDs to save power, and I was also converting mine to an HID headlight to save a few more watts (35 watts vs 40), and more light than a 60 watt halogen bulb - 2 birds.....
I'd also swapped in a new alternator of more capacity (20 amps), as well...... Major improvement, but still peanuts compared to the 33 amps on the Bolt!
