Rear wheel noise
« on: August 21, 2016, 06:43:03 pm »
I'm getting a rubbing metallic noise from the rear when rolling the bike into my parking spot.  Doesn't really sound like brakes, kind of like bearings.  I should be able to Jack it up this week. Anybody have any ideas what I should look at and how to know for sure the noise is coming from the bearings? That is if i eliminate the brakes for sure.

Remove the rear caliper assembly, and spin wheel.  Do NOT squeeze the brake lever, if you remove the caliper.  ;)

And make sure your belt isn't rubbing on the belt cover.

Checked the belt cover yesterday, don't think it was rubbing.  Why shouldn't I squeeze the brake lever with caliper off? Haha, j/k.
I need to check pads, I ride the Damn thing too much to take the time to dig into it.  Need to change plugs and balance the injectors too. Oh yeah, it's already time to change the oil too.  Oh, and aren't I supposed to grease the swing arm at 20,000 miles?  It never ends...
Wish I had a garage.

Lol, and of course I meant "don't push the brake pedal", not "don't squeeze the brake lever" considering we're talking about the rear brakes.  :)

Yeah, I caught that, didn't figure it needed to be corrected. Of course, with some people, you never know!

Is greasing the swingarm even a thing? The manual says to re pack it at 20,000, but the service manual doesn't show greasing it, just shows checking the bearings and pivot arms.  Is it just supposed to take a coating of white lithium between the bearings and pivot arm?

I'm a dumbass. Not metallic rubbing. Rubber rubbing. As in belt was rubbing against the side of the rear pulley.  Oh well, it's adjusted now.

I told you to check and see if your belt was rubbing..... :)
Although it usually rubs on the belt guard, as the guards tend to get bent rather easily....

Yes.  If you choose to disassemble it to that point.  ;)

I'm choosing not to.  I envisioned some sort of setup with a non sealed bearing and having to re pack it with EP2, or some such thing.  In this case, if it ain't broke...  ?

Lol, I wasn't looking for validation or anything like that - I'm just glad you found it and the fix was rather easy.
