Need help getting clutch cable off
« on: February 04, 2016, 10:15:49 pm »
So i've given it as much slack as it looks like I can give it.  The two nuts where the cable meets the clutch are loose to give it more play as well. Can't seem to get any more out of it.

Where am I going wrong?

If you're trying to get it off, you need to spin them all the way out. Then pull the cable out

Damn, really? I think when I tried to spin them all the out they just covered up the metal end of the cable casing more & when i'd pull on it, it didnt have room to go anywhere. I'll give it another shot tomorrow, thanks!

The trick is to slacken the adjuster as much as you can.
Make sure the slots are all aligned in the lever perch and adjuster.
Then pull the clutch lever to the bar.
With the other hand pull the outer cable as if you were pulling it tighter and then at the same time release the clutch lever quickly.
That will give it enough slack to pull out the inner cable through the slot and hop the end of the outer from the adjuster.
When refitting the cable put the nipple in the lever first. Line up the slots as before and rest the end of the outer cable onto the wide part of the adjuster. Pull the clutch lever yo the bar and as you release the lever pop the inner cable through the gap while tugging the outer as though pulling it tight.
I hope this makes sense!
It really is easy (and obvious) once you've done it one time.

There is a second adjustment point by the clutch lever on the side of the bike. Just behind the clutch cover. It has to 12mm nuts. Loosen them and you can give yourself more slack from there.

Be careful not to bend the cable or twist it too much when installing. Every ridden with a broken clutch cable?  :o

Yep, on my old Virago. Wasn't the cable though it was the lever, same deal though, no clutch. It was a long weekend away trip with 25 other riders.  Had been raining quite heavily earlier on in the ride. One of the other riders flagged me down because he saw my luggage starting to slip. Pulled over on side of road and the side stand sunk when we were attending to the luggage. Bike went over before we could grab it. The lever hit his peg on the way down. Looked okay when I got back on, but must have been a hairline crack. A few kms down the road ( and after probably half a dozen gear changes or so and it broke off down near where it attached to the cable. The cable was the only thing holding it on.

About 20kms through twisties mostly downhill. Changing gears down and matching revs was a lot easier than going up.
Good things come to those who wait...greater things happen to those who get off their arse and do something about it.

Yup - my cable snapped completely on my XS650  (I guess they weren't meant to last 30 years.... :P) - was a VERY interesting ride home..... luckily it was almost totally highway miles and an empty road....
