A little project
« on: November 23, 2014, 12:24:48 pm »
So guys after seeing all these nice slim and trimmed fenders on the cafe racers and the bolts that have been modded to be cafe racers, I decided I had to have me a fender like that. Easy day right? Got my old fender that's been sitting around and cut it up, ground it down smooth and so far priming it.

Hope y'all enjoy

Looks good.  How did you determine how much from each end to cut off?

I did some lines with a sharpie and decided which marks  I liked best. Used the old tips as a template to round off the edges and make t look decent

Getting. Sprayed with a black metallic and then clear coated. I'll wet sand it in a couple days

Looks pretty sharp, nice work on those curves. Looks like you got a couple of dents in the fender though... is that just a glitch in the photo?

No glitch, they're dents I didn't notice until after priming. Not sure how they got there in the first place to be honest, but I guess there staying..

Sorry to hear it...Nothing a little bondo wouldn't fix though! (and doing it over primer is better than on bare metal). However, if you're using a high-gloss top coat you may not even see them with all the glare. Keep us posted, looking forward to seeing it on the bike.- J

Update on the fender, I'm stripping it back down and taking care of some imperfections that presented themselves, especially the dents

Well I figured I only put a few days worth of work into it. Main reason this is happening is because this fender is a test run. If it turns out well I'm going to do my tank. I have a small dent in the top from my handle bars hitting it during a wreck. But I may just say fuck it, pick up some more paint and do the tank too

Looks good nuke.

Now you just need to do a rear chop for the bike, and by bike, I mean us.

If I can make a jig to bend the sheet metal around and make a rear fender I will. I love the bkb fender but it's $250. Steep for a piece of sheet metal

For just the materials that would be expensive... but how many hours of work to cut and shape it... and then prime and paint it?  How much per hour is that kind of skill worth? $250 is pretty cheap if you factor labor into it. Just sayin'...

right, but wrong, IMO.  There has got to be more options for us to get a lower profile fender.  Either modifying the original or doing something new and simple.

Who ever comes up with it will be legendary in the community lol.  I'd say that there is a whole lot of interest in the low profile rear fender market, just going off of all the pics of the federless bolts.
