Custom made upper fork covers ...
« on: April 25, 2014, 09:08:23 pm »
First off, let me say thanks to Low and Mean for the idea. While I'm sure that their product is fine, I felt I could do it for myself a little cheaper.

For the record, I bought all of the parts at Lowe's. I used schedule 40, 1  1/2" diameter PVC. I cut the sections to within 1/16" of the overall length. Then I cut a slit from end to end. (the ID. is just a bit too small as is, this allows the pieces to expand around the forks.) Then I painted the pieces with Rustolium black appliance epoxy paint. I had great success with this paint when I rebuilt my '79 XS650. Once I had the pieces installed, I rotated the slits to toward the headlight so they could not be seen. I then cut open an o-ring (which I got in the plumbing section) that was close in diameter to the 41mm forks. I pushed in the o-ring at the bottom of the pieces to tighten up the fit.

I probably saved myself $60 to $70 dollars for my trouble.   Let me know what you think?

I have gaiters on order and have been thinking of ways to do this step when I do those...I was looking at shop vac extensions, pvc, etc...

I like it.

Nice job man, looks just as good as the L&M's.

This is how I went about it.

Don't forget about the TCT wrap kits. Have the upper fork covers on their website. $10 or so I believe.

Stoked! just searched for ways to black out that upper fork and found this thread. Hit up their site and bought the full chrome blackout package (headlight, taillight and upper fork) for 22 bucks, including shipping!

You guys have an easy time installing this? hair dryer and a little exacto knife, I'm guessing?

I like this. I have the L&M ones for the stock turn signals but am moving and replacing the turn signals so I need the longer ones now. I wonder how well the PVC would take RIT dye? I might try that and see how it looks before deciding to paint.

Me too! I think I'll have to redo them when I pull the forks to put in Ricor cartridges.  Luckily I got a 1' x 3' sheet cheap from Amazon.
