It would probably be easier to put on a smaller belt wheel on... You'd lose some acceleration, but the engine is easily capable.

has anyone played around with different pulley sizes?

my last bike was a VN900 custom which was way undergeared, so there was a healthy development going on in changing pulleys. Scootworks & Baron were active in this area. Larger front pulleys draw the wheel forward so clearance can be an issue if fitting larger tires, smaller rear pulleys in conjunction with larger fronts solve that problem, or smaller rears on their own are an option.

I say this just for those who would like a higher top gear, I actually think the gearing is perfect as it is!

Definitely something to consider. I would love an overdrive for freeway or the open desert.

Don't know that I'd do a "permanent" fix to change the RPM/gearing out here. It's perfect where it's at for cruising mountain roads, incidental inclines/declines, or just punching it for flat out speed. My daily commute takes me anywhere from around 4,300 feet in altitude to around 4,900 back to 4,700. If I'm just out for a long day of cruising I can easily get to around 8,000 feet and down to around 3,000 feet.

Too much elevation change and too many hills to climb (which is 60% of the fun!).

I find 5th gear is perfect for anything over 50 up to ludicrous speed.  There is no point downshifting at 65 into 4th because you're already at peak torque at that point in 5th.  Power starts to drop off above 5,300 rpm pretty quickly, so there's nothing to be gained be revving it like an inline 4!

Know this topic is  a little old. I commute 46 miles at 70-75 mph, one way in Los Angeles, never had a problem and the Bolt has never seemed to be revving to high. Occassionally keep it aroudn 80 mph but never for more than 10 or 15 miles. As many others have said, there is plenty of power for a 6th.

I've had this bike in many different places, different speeds, loaded down, and I can't say that the bike needs a 6th gear. Would I like a 6th gear? you bet, it would eliminate that stupid feeling when I try to upshift from 5 gear when it happens. Although that problem wouldn't disappear completely, it would just change a little, cause somewhere around cruising speed I would try and upshift from 6 gear into 7th. I'm a 300lb man with my gear, this bike pulls hard from idle on up. I've got friends riding with me to the Rock Store shifting up/down real busy like, I just twist the throttle or back off of it.  you got 50+lbs of torque down at 3000rpms that makes for a fun street experience.

Old thread i know but anyway..I thought i needed a 6th gear until i installed mods.
Cobra Fi2000 auto tune really drops the revs in 5th for highway use and gives plenty of top end grunt.

I have a PowerCommander V, and still have plenty of muscle left at 100mph, but it is wound pretty tight.. I think a sixth gear would be nice.. but I'm wondering if Ivan's ECU flash might open the top end a bit..
anybody watching this thread done the flash?
