Scrapping foot pegs
« on: September 19, 2015, 05:40:31 pm »
So I took my bolt out to the mountain today for the first time, gotta say I'm loving it. Just one thing, I keep scrapping my foot pegs and it startles me when it happens. I'm used to my GSXR that I had where I could lay it in the turns. I'm sure I'll get use to it

In addition to my Bolt, I have a 1987 Cagiva 650 Alazzurra and a 1979 Honda CB650.  I learned pretty quickly that I can't ride the Bolt like I can these other bikes, mainly because I'll scrape the pegs, which is VERY unnerving to me, and I've been riding for over 30 years.  I just have to keep in mind what I'm riding when I'm on the Bolt, and take it easier around corners and such.  Makes for a much more enjoyable, drama-free ride!

I scrape pegs all the time. There are a lot of round abouts where I live. I almost make it a game! But it also keeps my speed in check. I tend to slow down more in a curve because I don't want to scrape too hard. It's not a bad thing to scrape. I feel it keeps me safer.

I did play that game of scraping pegs with a passenger. I don't recommend it. I was a lot lower then I normally am when riding alone. With that said, heavier people probably scrape pegs a lot faster then light weights like me. Though, I am not as skinny as I used to could!

If they're not scraping, then you're not riding right! This bike has too low pegs, sad but true. They're gonna scrape if you lean into a turn the way you're supposed to.

I scraped my pegs over the weekend...when I didn't put the kickstand down. Thank God I never fully let go and was able to get it back up without any problems.

I went with longer rear shocks. It added quite a bit more lean angle to the bike.

Look for the Hagon USA thread.

I too went with longer hagon shocks that helps the bike have more of a sport bike feel to it because it gets quicker steering.
I also replaced the footpegs with kuryakyn kinetic foot pegs on offset adaptors and that gave me even more clearance. I can really lay the bike into corners. I tried to keep up with some crotch rockets on the twisties and the bolt did well but still not gonna be able to keep up

On the question of longer shocks, what's the right way to measure the length of shocks?  I'm assuming you have to measure eye to eye, yes?  If so, do you measure with the rear end on the ground, lifted, or somewhere in-between?

I think scraping the pegs is inevitable on the Bolt. Has anyone adapted their riding style to accommodate the reduced lean angles? Obviously bum off seat would look plain ridiculous so I am tending to lean my upper body more forward and into the corner.

I've got better at not scrapping now, so I guess I'm doing something right. Still scrapping when I really get into it but definitely not as much as I was the first week of riding it.
